Purpose of Position The Assistant Fire Marshal assists in fire prevention and investigation activities to safeguard public safety, health, and general welfare.
Compensation
Fire Inspector Rate: $26.09 – $36.09 (for candidates hired without full required certifications)
Certified Assistant Fire Marshal Rate: $28.75 - $39.79 (applied once all listed certifications are obtained)
Minimum Requirements
Option 1: 3 years of experience in the fire service, completion of professional firefighter I/II, Fire investigator I, Fire Inspector I, or equivalent combination of education and experience and must obtain APOST certification within one year of employment OR Option 2: APOST Certified with 3 years of experience, must obtain Professional Firefighter I/II, Fire Investigator I, Fire Inspector I within one year of employment
Essential Functions (not all-inclusive)
Conduct fire prevention inspections and enforce compliance with fire codes
Review construction and remodeling plans for code compliance
Inspect and test fire protection/detection systems
Issue occupancy certificates and permits; condemn unsafe structures
Investigate suspicious and accidental fires, including evidence collection and arrests
Prepare case files and testify in court as needed
Assist with code enforcement and permitting processes
Maintain accurate records and documentation
Operate service truck and maintain vehicle readiness
Collaborate with law enforcement, engineers, contractors, and officials
Interpret fire codes and provide public education presentations
Maintain regular and predictable attendance
