Building Official 

$84,110 - $116,418 salary range 


The City of Alabaster is seeking an experienced and motivated professional to lead its Building Department. This position oversees building inspections, plan reviews, permitting processes, and ensures compliance with all applicable building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards. The role includes managing departmental staff, developing policies, and supporting city boards and leadership.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise building inspectors, plans examiners, and permit staff
  • Review and approve building permits, plans, and certificates of occupancy
  • Conduct and oversee inspections for residential, commercial, and industrial projects
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local codes and ordinances
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and training programs
  • Provide technical guidance to contractors, developers, and the public
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and support enforcement actions
  • Represent the department at city meetings, boards, and public engagements
  • Foster a culture of customer service, professionalism, and continuous improvement

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and 10+ years of experience in construction or building inspections
  • ICC certifications in building inspection and/or plans examination required
  • Ability to obtain Certified Building Official (CBO) certification within 3 years of hire
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of building codes, zoning regulations, and compliance practices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional ICC certifications
  • Experience in municipal building or code enforcement leadership

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Combination of office and field work, including construction site inspections
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions and construction-related hazards
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform routine physical activity inside and outside
